A man named Burl who lived in the mountains of Tennessee was one day walking along a mountain path. All of a sudden he slipped and fell down, tumbling over and over. When he finally came to a stop, he was at the bottom of a deep chasm. Burl realized he was injured because he could not move. He lay there for a long time, hoping that someone would happen to come by and find him.
Finally, just as he was about to give up all hope, he heard a voice say, “Howdy! You okay down there?” Burl replied, “I don’t know who you are, but I’m in a mighty bad way. My leg’s broken, and I can’t move.” The voice then said, “Well, don’t you worry. I’ll get you out of there.”
A moment later, Burl saw a man climb down into the chasm. He was a big man, with a long beard and kind eyes. He picked Burl up as if he weighed nothing, and carried him out of the chasm. Burl was very grateful. He said, “Thank you, stranger. You saved my life.” The man smiled and said, “It was my pleasure. My name’s Bubba. And what’s your name?” Burl replied, “My name’s Burl.” The two men then shook hands, and became the best of friends.
